As the examination season is nearing, the everyday newspaper is a red alert for students as well as their parents and mentors. Until a decade back, it used to be a tough exercise for the students and their parents to track all the examinations and their application processes.
The centralisation of the engineering entrance examinations has come as a big relief for the students and their parents. JEE Main and JEE Advanced have become the gateway for a majority of the prestigious colleges. The other prestigious engineering colleges either fall under the state-specific engineering entrance examinations or conduct their own examinations like BITS.
As an aspirant, it is always important to account for any contingency or unforeseen circumstances and thus apply for other exams beyond JEE and BITS. Here are few of the entrance examinations you should keep a track of.
BITSAT: BITSAT notification for online application is usually released in the first week of January and the form submission continues till the first week of March. The booking of test slot is done in the third week of March.
VITEEE: Conducted by the Vellore Institute of Technology, this exam offers admission to 5,000 engineering seats in the VIT Vellore and VIT Chennai, considered to be a highly prestigious private engineering college in India. The exam mandates 60% (50% for SC/ST/OBC) marks in PCM/PCB in class XII or equivalent.
WBJEE: West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) is a coveted exam taken by more than 2 lakh candidates every year as it offers admissions to the highly prestigious Jadavpur University. The exam is reserved for students with West Bengal domicile and is usually held in the month of May.
MHTCET: The Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHTCET) is mandatory for entry into various engineering colleges in Maharashtra. It is conducted in two phases at two different times of the year. For gaining eligibility, students need to have 50% (45% for SC/ST/OBC) in their class XII or equivalent examination.
KCET: Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) is conducted to admit students into engineering colleges in Karnataka. Aspirants are mandated to have passed 10+2 from with a minimum of 45% (40% for SC/ST/OBC) in PCM. Also, the candidates need to be a resident of Karnataka and outside Karnataka, candidates can appear only if they have studied 7 years in the state.
KIITEE: Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology Entrance Examination (KIITEE) is conducted by the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology for admission to courses in its group of institutions. It is held in online mode as a Computer Based Test (CBT). It requires 10+2 with a minimum of 60%.
UPSEE: Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Exam (UPSEE) is conducted by Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University. It has about 1.50 lakh engineering seats including around 4,000 seats at government colleges. Candidates are required to have secured minimum 45 % (40% for SC/ST/OBC) in 10+2 or equivalent exam with Mathematics and Physics as main subjects along with Bio-Technology/Chemistry/Biology/Technical or Vocational subject as the optional subject.
