JEE Advanced 2017
After the declaration of JEE Main results, the second phase of the competition is poised to be conducted on May 21, 2017. As the JEE Advanced Admit cards have been released, it is important to strategize your test taking strategy as much as to practice the concepts and mock tests.
As the JEE Advanced is written by serious aspirants, it becomes tougher and witnesses immense competition. Apart from the concepts, it is very important to understand the requirements of a foolproof strategy for JEE Advanced. An aspirant should be able to understand his/her current standing in various concepts and be able to categorise questions from chapters into tough and easy (as per his/her existing knowledge). So, the main constituents of a solid strategy for JEE Advanced include:
- In-depth Knowledge of syllabus and weight of various topics: It is of utmost importance for an aspirant to know the key topics which are going to fetch him/her more marks. While it is true that JEE Advanced does not subscribe to a prescribed format and weight, experts have over the years found that some key concepts cannot be ignored in the JEE exam and their contribution to the total score remains predictable to a large extent.
- Physics: In Physics, Mechanics is one such topic which accounts for nearly 30% – 40% marks. Electricity and Magnetism are another topics which accounts for a huge chunk of marks ranging from 20% – 30% of the Physics score. Therefore, mastering these two concepts can help an aspirant secure the sectional cut off
Problems from Thermal Physics can easily make up 10% – 15% of the Physics score in JEE Advanced. Both Optics and Modern Physics account for 8% – 15% marks from Physics section. Apart from these, few other general topics may weigh up to 5%.

- Chemistry: Chemistry is the easiest subject among for a student who is thorough with his/her school concepts. Class XII Organic Chemistry has been accounting for nearly 20% of the JEE Advanced Chemistry score over the past three years. In comparison, the Organic Chemistry from Class XI has been observed to carry 10% – 12% of the total JEE Advanced Chemistry score. The Physical Chemistry of class XI have accounted for nearly 20% – 30%, while that of class XII has accounted for 8% – 22% marks in JEE Advanced Chemistry in the past three years. In comparison, the remaining topics of Inorganic Chemistry have accounted for nearly 30% score of JEE Advanced Chemistry over the past three years.

- Math: In Math subject, Algebra and Probability have been the most scoring topic with its weight ranging from 35% – 40% in the past three years. Both Differential and Integral Calculus amount to a total of 15% of the total marks in JEE Advanced Math. Trigonometry has accounted for 8% – 10% while Analytical Geometry and Vectors & 3D Geometry each sum up to 10% – 15% of the total JEE Advanced Math score.

- Identifying the ROI on each question: For an aspirant, it is of utmost importance to categorise the questions as doable and non-doable. For maximising his/her score, it is very important for a student to utilise the test time judiciously. In general, it is said that JEE has 20-30% easy questions, 50-60% average questions, and 10-20% tough questions.
An aspirant who can utilise his time and efforts judiciously can score very high.
- Knowing and speculating the cutoff: Being well acquainted with the pattern and scores is very important for an aspirant. One should be fully aware how much score he/she needs to aim and should study accordingly. Also, it is a fact that if one increases speed, the accuracy comes down and vice versa. Therefore, a candidate needs to strike the right balance so as to maximise score.
- Keeping a to-do list for last few days: An aspirant who is fully aware of his/her strengths and weaknesses as well as the topics that can fetch him/her more marks can plan his/her last day studies accordingly. It is important to target the most scoring topics which would take the least time.
- Enlisting key formulae and concepts: Last but not the least, a serious JEE Advanced aspirant must be well versed with important formulae and redundant question types that have been featured in JEE Advanced repeatedly.
