Why do 97.2% Students Fail to Crack IIT JEE?

Over 12 lakh students test their luck every year by taking IIT JEE but less than 1% are able to make it to the IIT campus gates. Count another 1.8% who settle for other reputed colleges like NITs, almost 97.2% face disappointment and either settle for mediocre colleges or plan to reappear (if eligible).

Quite a shocking number, isn’t it?

So, what happens with the rest? Where do they go wrong? Is their preparation strategy all wrong?

When such an important life decision is at stake, it is worth knowing what mistakes lead to failure of the majority of IIT aspirants. Well, leaving this chaos for you to figure out yourself would be too much to ask. So, we did all the hard work in a quest to provide you with the answer to this deadly question – Why do 97.2% students fail in IIT JEE?

We spoke to thousands of IIT JEE toppers over the years, their mentors & teachers and analyzed more than 1.5 million mock test performances on our online test platform. As a part of this activity, we managed to pull off a huge amount of data that helped us in drawing some interesting insights.

We summarized our findings in the below-mentioned points which every JEE aspirant should know. No matter if you have dropped a year after taking JEE, or you’re just starting off with your preparation from the scratch, read this to ensure that your IIT JEE preparation is on the right track.

  1. JEE is hard

We understand that! Cracking JEE is not a walk in the park. The main objective of IIT JEE is to test the core understanding of students at the concept level. The way the syllabus is organized, taught and tested in the schools is not of much help when it comes to JEE preparation. Starting your preparation at the very granular (concept) level to gradually achieve the concept mastery is what is needed to crack IIT JEE. We further analyzed that the students who use some smart preparation tools (like myPAT) do better and outperform their competitors as they possess a competitive edge over other JEE aspirants. Concept-based learning methodology where the syllabus is broken down into small, easy-to-understand concepts helps them strengthen their core and hence do better.

  1. Sticking to the schedule is a challenge

Most of the students start off with their preparation with a lot of enthusiasm. They make study schedules and timetables to plan their preparation well. But, it generally happens that after some time, they turn lenient towards their daily planned study schedule. There are enough distractions and plenty of other reasons which lead to the procrastination. The school life also tends to interfere with the JEE preparation schedule. With every passing day, these distractions stick to them like those addictive bad habits which are hard to overcome. What we saw is that even good students struggle to follow the designated schedule with a strict approach. However, to get rid of it, there are many prep tracker tools available like myPAT’s JEE Prep Tracker which helps you keep a track of your preparation on a regular basis and also helps you prepare a personalised study plan for yourself. This way you never really get off the track, throwing your chance of getting selected in IIT JEE.

  1. Conventional coaching centre set up

There are usually around 60 students in a batch (often more than that). Every student has a different learning curve and style but all are taught with the same approach and at the same pace. Often students hesitate to ask their doubts in a class full of students which arouses the need for personalised education where the students can feel comfortable with the pace and flow of syllabus. The same approach is followed by myPAT where the study plan is personalised according to the need of every student based on the powerful analytics-driven test results and he/she can identify his stronger and weaker domains. Once strengths and weaknesses are identified, the students can further analyse their scope of improvement and design the next course of action. According to our research, this approach of personalised learning methods actually helps students in making their preparation more efficient.

  1. Monotonous routine

Let’s face the fact together, studying for long hours is boring. Owing to the large amount of syllabus and sincerity required, studying is included in 70% of our routine activities. Most students tend to fall into a vicious cycle of attending school, finishing homework & other school activities, attending coaching classes, homework again. It is quite obvious to feel dull and monotonous. Additionally, the peer pressure to excel brings down our original potential. All study no play makes you dull. Remember the summer camps we had in childhood which promoted our hobbies and allowed us to try various new activities. Revisiting and reliving your hobbies help a great deal. Take short but frequent breaks in between your study schedule and do something which pumps up your energy levels. This way your concentration and focus while studying will improve too.

  1. Giving up just when its time

Most of the students start off really good. Filled with enthusiasm, they leave no stone unturned when they start preparing for JEE. However, due to lack of proper guidance & personalised mentoring, they lose the track. And in the last 3-4 critical months when maximum time & energy is needed to maximize the chance of selection, they give up. Then they begin contemplating and deciding to take another attempt (most of the times) or settle themselves for a mediocre college. To overcome this, in your initial days of preparation, make a list of “Why’s”. Write down all the possible answers for why do you want to be in an IIT. Keep that paper safe with you and whenever you feel demotivated, take that sheet out and read it aloud. You now know again that why you started and realize the importance of achieving your goal. Give your best in the last leg of your preparation as this is when it actually matters. Revise what you’ve already learned and take umpteen number of mock tests. Never give up. NEVER!!!

Do you know? 5 out of every 6 JEE aspirants fall prey to a faulty preparation strategy, resulting in disastrous performance.

Read how you can rectify it and plenty of such interesting facts in our next story.
