How to use assessments as a learning instrument (and not as evaluation instrument)

From time immemorial assessments has been a significant part of our life. From the very beginning of the learning years, students take assessments. This is the tool that evaluates student’s academic standing. We agree that it’s important to know the academic standing of every student, but we must focus on the aim of education that is learning. It’s way important for students to learn from the assessments rather than just answering random questions and moving ahead.

Here we have listed certain measures those can turn our assessments into learning instrument:

Higher Order Thinking Questions

Our assessment must focus on Higher Order Thinking Questions. These are the questions that make our students think creatively, critically, and in an innovative way. Students answer such questions with utmost logic. This is the true learning tool while taking an assessment.

SWOT Analysis

Post assessment result, students must assess themselves. They must look at their Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. This gives them a clear picture of their academic standing. It works organically for our students. As when the will to work on ourselves comes from inside, then the goals are achieved. This way students are more likely to own their goals and work hard to turn them into reality.

Post- Assessment Analysis by teachers

After assessment teachers must analyze the student results and know the weak concepts and weak students. So that extra focus can be laid on them. Through this way, learning becomes a post-assessment condition as well and helps students in a huge way through the positive intervention of teachers. The only problem is that analyzing the results of every student individually is a time-consuming task and teachers already have a lot on their plate. For this, we have a certain assessment and evaluation tools in the market like myPAT. These tools give the true analytical data of a student’s performance and help teachers to plan a remedy.

Sharing Analytics-based detailed results with parents

Sharing with parents the detailed results with the entire remedy plan can help teachers and students in a huge way. As students spend lion’s share of their time at home and due to pandemics, this time span is also increased. Parents can keep a scanner on how to implement the correction plan effectively. This way post-assessment learning becomes a norm.

Regular and Formative assessments

Regular and concept-based assessments are a huge plus for learning. After teaching every concept, the teacher can give an assessment to the student. This way teachers realize if the concept is clear among students or not. If not, they can formulate another strategy to teach and if they are good with it then they can move ahead further. This way learning and assessment work simultaneously.

These were certain techniques that can be used to turn assessment into a learning process rather than just a part of the curriculum that students may or may not care about. Everything should have a purpose behind it. The only purpose behind assessments should be learning enhancement and these methods are the road to make it happen.
